10 Years Later . . .

John Kent Cooke’s Boxwood Estate Winery in Middleburg, Virginia is celebrating its 10th Anniversary Vintage release beginning July 4th weekend.

“The Virginia wine industry has expanded and so have we,” said John Kent Cooke.  “When my wife Rita and I planned the vineyard and the construction of the winery in the early 2000’s, there were only 75 wineries in the state and now there are over 280 at last count. In addition, Virginia now has seven American Viticulture Areas.  The most recent AVA, Middleburg Virginia, was proposed and initiated by Boxwood.”

Boxwood has expanded from 16 acres originally to 26 today, and now grows white Bordeaux grapes as well as red.

In this Anniversary season Boxwood is introducing Boxwood Estate Reserve, a Bordeaux style blend of the estate’s finest grapes, and the introduction of the first Sauvignon Blanc, sold exclusively this year in Boxwood’s Tasting Rooms and Wine Club.

These wines join the Topiary, Trellis and Rose labels, to produce no more than 5,000 cases each year.  All wines are critically acclaimed and are sold out annually.

“This success is the result of choosing varietals and clones suitable to this area, maintaining a sustainable vineyard, and meticulously processing the grapes into our fine wine,” said John Kent Cooke, adding “All possible by keeping our key people in place from its beginning: Executive Vice President, Rachel Martin, Vice President, Sean Martin, Viticulturist, Lucie Morton, International Consultant Winemaker, Stephane Derenoncourt.”

And now to the future . . .

#BoxwoodOnTheRoad with Jessica, Regional Sales Manager

I hope everyone is enjoying the start of summer. We’ve kicked off our summer hours at Boxwood Winery, so don’t forget that we are now open on Thursdays! It's a great day to visit wine country because the pace tends to be a little more laid back, and its a nice break if you can manage to carve a little leisure time out of your busy day.

I recently had the great pleasure of attending the Virginia Wine Summit in Charlottesville. Boxwood's Rosé was featured in a panel discussion and received rave reviews. I provided samples of our Sauvignon Blanc and Trellis '15 to industry individuals from all over the United States, and a few lucky people got to try the Boxwood Reserve. This is one of our most elegant wines to date, and the response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

If you haven’t tried the new releases yet, stop by the winery or The Tasting Room Wine Bar & Shop locations in Reston or National Harbor. Our full lineup will be available at additional fine restaurants in the Leesburg area soon, I’ll be sure to keep you posted on when and where!

In other news, Total Wine has picked up our Rosé and Trellis '15, so make sure to go to the local section when you visit.

July is going to be a very exciting month at Boxwood, and I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming events.

As always, cheers, and don’t forget to:

Vineyard Updates from Tyler, Winemaker & Vineyard Manager

Spring has seemingly come and gone and we are now full speed ahead in the vineyard as the summer weather is here to stay.  Since our last update, we have completed the process of “bloom” in all of our individual vineyard blocks and are very excited with the progress thus far.  As a self-pollinating plant, the bloom phase of vine growth is an extremely important process that will give us a good indication of the vine’s health and help us speculate about the quality of the upcoming harvest.  So far so good!  As the picture shows below, we have achieved a healthy “fruit set” and are excited about the prospects of the 2017 vintage!  From this point on, the berries will continue to expand in size and begin sugar accumulation up to the day of harvest.

From our newly planted Sauvignon Gris to the original vines from “A Block” that date back to 2004, our crew is working diligently to ensure that each vine gets the attention it needs during the growing season.  As always, we invite you to visit the estate to observe the different growth stages throughout the year.  We hope to see you here soon!

Meet the Staff: Dorothy
Winery Manager

Dorothy was born in the Philadelphia suburbs and grew up in Ocean City, New Jersey. She received her BSBA with a dual concentration in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from Northeastern University in Boston and moved to Virginia in 2009.

For seven years she toiled away for government contractors in small cubicles under fluorescent lighting, counting down to the weekends when she could escape to the local farms and wineries.

As her passion for the wine industry grew, Dorothy wondered if she could ever be more than just a visitor. She began researching opportunities to which she could apply her business, marketing and operations experience.

Dorothy immersed herself in all things wine, reading everything she could get her hands on, working a weekend job as a tasting room associate at Casanel Vineyards in Leesburg, and attending every single industry event to which she was invited.

Six months later, Dorothy is extremely proud that she can now say she is the Winery Manager of Boxwood Estate and couldn't be more excited about her new career path.
