Jim Kress grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His route to winemaking started as he was completing his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. After a successful start to a management consulting career in hotels and restaurants in New York, New York, his passion for food and wine eventually led him to the Master of Science program in Viticulture and Enology at University of California, Davis.
With 23 vintages of experience, Kress has worked with multiple varietals to create wines defined by the soil and the climate of the region and that are representative of the finest practices of viticulture and chemistry. His impressive resume includes a number of notable vineyards including winemaker at Vine Cliff, where he crafted award winning Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville, one of Napa Valleyís most prestigious appellations.
Boxwood Winery is excited to welcome Jim Kress to the team. He will be working in tandem with our long-time consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt one of Bordeaux's great winemakers, to continue the tradition of Boxwood's premium estate-grown Bordeaux-style blends.
While we're waiting for Jim's first vintage, you can enjoy the current vintages by purchasing online, at the winery, or either of our Tasting Room Wine Bar & Shop locations in Reston or National Harbor!
Next time you are on the suite level at Nats Stadium, you will notice new additions to the wine menu! Our RosÈ 2017 and Trellis 2014 have been a big hit over the last couple of months. For more places you can find Boxwood wine, see our website and follow our social media channels. We look forward to seeing your pictures enjoying Boxwood around the DMV!
Our new pavilion will officially be open on August 18th! Pavilion access will be reserved for you, our Wine Club Members, and early afternoon Group Tasting Experiences. To celebrate, we are kicking off opening weekend with a special SOLD OUT event for Wine Club Members only - a dinner in the vineyard with Roots 657 and (of course) Boxwood wine. We are looking forward to holding more of these events in the future!
We are also starting to prepare for this fall's wine allocation and Harvest Celebration on September 22nd and 23rd. Our annual Harvest Celebration is the best time to pick up your wine, because the day also includes barrel tastings with the winemaker, fresh varietal grape samples picked straight from the vineyard, artisanal cheeses, and more. We will be sending out more details to the Wine Club Members in a separate email, but there is still time to join before then!
If you are hosting a future event and are still searching for the perfect venue, be sure to consider our different rental options! Your group can opt to take over the Chai (tank room) for the day or have the entire winery to yourselves for up to four hours. We have a trusted list of caterers available for your convenience, but you are welcome to introduce us to a new crew as well! For more information please review our website and feel free to reach out to Dorothy at firstname.lastname@example.org or 540.687.8778.
